Procedure of an abortion
First of all there will be a consultation with one of our psychologists or psychotherapists at the beginning of your appointment. In this conversation you can discuss all questions in a safe environment.
Then one of our gynecologists will explain the medical procedure in detail and inform you about the associated risks. An ultrasound scan is then done to pinpoint the week of pregnancy.
How you proceed depends on whether you have opted for a medicinal termination of pregnancy or a surgical abortion. In the following lines we explain both methods in detail.
Procedure of medicinal abortion
Medical abortion is possible up to the 63rd day from the beginning of the last menstruation. With this form of treatment, the termination extends over several days.
On the first day, after the previous ultrasound examination and medical advice is taken in tablet form under medical supervision. This leads to an interruption in the care of the pregnancy.
Another drug is used two days later. This can be taken at VenusMed or at home as a tablet or inserted into the vagina. The active ingredient leads to regular cramps and thus in most cases to the expulsion of pregnancy. Sometimes this can take up to 24 hours.
About 10 days later, VenusMed uses ultrasound to check whether the pregnancy has been terminated in full. If the drug termination is unsuccessful, surgery is required to terminate the pregnancy.
Procedure of surgical termination of pregnancy
In the case of a surgical abortion, you will be taken to the relaxation room after the ultrasound examination. There you will get an injection from one of our anesthetists for a short general anesthetic. If you prefer local anesthesia instead, this is also possible with us.
You will then be driven to the surgery room – in case of general anesthesia, this happens when you are already soundly asleep. Finally, in the course of the procedure, your gynecologist will carefully expand the cervix a few millimeters with the help of metal rods so that a suction tube can be inserted. Through this, the embryo and the uterine lining are sucked off. The doctor then checks whether the mucous membrane and embryo have been completely removed. The procedure itself is done after about 10 to 15 minutes.
When you wake up, you are finally back in the relaxation room, where you can recover. You can then leave our center about an hour after the procedure. Together with the preliminary discussion and the postoperative wake-up or rest time, you should plan around 1.5 to 2 hours for the entire appointment.
What to consider before and after the procedure
First of all, it is important to take into account that you are not allowed to eat or drink anything for 6 hours before the procedure. This is necessary because you need to have an empty stomach for the anesthesia.
Please also consider that you will not be able to drive for the rest of the day after the operation due to the general anesthesia. Therefore, you should neither drive nor cycle home. If you have had general anesthesia, it is be best to have someone pick you up and escort you home, or to use public transport.
If you can or would like to, we also recommend you bring someone you trust with you to your appointment. They can accompany you the entire time – except during the procedure itself – and give you additional support in this situation.
Moreover, it is normal that bleeding might occur after the procedure. This is usually less than your normal menstruation would be, and it can last for 1-2 weeks. While it persists, you should not go swimming, take baths, and you should also avoid sexual intercourse, or the use of tampons or menstrual cups.
Furthermore, after an abortion, you can of course get pregnant again and have children according to your age. Because if the procedure is carried out correctly, it has no effect on later pregnancies.
Our experienced doctors will be happy to explain everything else to you in detail in a personal conversation.

The impunity of pregnancy terminations is regulated in the Criminal Code (StGB) from 01.01. 2016, § 97:
(1) The act is not criminal according to §96,
- if the termination of pregnancy is carried out within the first three months after the beginning of the pregnancy after prior medical advice from a doctor; or
- if the termination of pregnancy is necessary to avert a serious danger to the pregnant woman’s life that cannot be otherwise avoided or a serious damage to her physical or mental health or if there is a serious risk that the child will mentally or physically be seriously damaged, or the pregnant woman was underage at the time she was impregnated, and if in all of these cases the termination is carried out by a doctor; or
- if the termination of pregnancy is done to save the pregnant woman from an immediate mortal danger that cannot otherwise be averted if medical help cannot be obtained in good time.
(2) No doctor is obliged to carry out an abortion or to contribute to it, unless the abortion is urgently necessary for saving the pregnant woman from an imminent mortal danger that cannot otherwise be averted. This also applies to those who work in any statutory health professions.
(3) Nobody may be penalised in whatever way because of the execution of an unpunishable abortion or because of the contribution to it, or because of the refusal to carry out such abortion or to contribute to it.

If you decide to have an abortion, on the day of your appointment you will first have a talk with one of our psychologists or psychotherapists before the procedure. There, you can discuss everything you want to discuss with him or her and get answers to your open questions.
Your gynecologist will then explain the procedure to you and then do out an ultrasound examination as a check-up. You will then be placed under anesthesia in the recovery room and then taken to the surgery room.
There, your gynecologist will begin to carefully open your cervix to suck off the embryo together with the uterine lining. When both have been completely removed, you will be taken back to the recovery room. The procedure itself takes about 10 to 15 minutes. After the procedure, you can leave our center after a recovery time of approximately one hour.
