A hormone analysis deals with the hormones in the body. These chemical messengers play an essential role in the body’s physical functioning. They transmit information within cells and between individual organs and control them. Hormones are responsible for your metabolic processes, vitality, fertility, the female cycle, as well as physical and sexual well-being. All these would not be possible without hormones.

Therefore, it is only logical that a hormonal imbalance can cause illnesses or problems surrounding various complex processes controlled by these chemical messengers. An imbalance of sex hormones for instance, may cause cycle disorders, infertility, potency problems, menopausal symptoms and much more. But a hormone analysis gives us information on the condition of the patient’s individual organs and metabolic processes. Therefore, at VenusMed we can diagnose whether a patient’s sexual problems may be caused by a hormone imbalance. In this case, our specialised doctors can find targeted treatment methods and therapy options for you.
The types of hormones
There are three groups of hormones that are important in daily clinical practice: thyroid hormones, neuro- and stress hormones, and of course sex hormones. While the former ones are responsible for the thyroid gland’s proper functioning, the neuro- and stress hormones (such as adrenaline, cortisone and noradrenaline) are responsible for your general well-being. If the latter are out of balance, stress-related illnesses such as depression, burnout or various pains may be a consequence.
As the name suggests, sex hormones are responsible for controlling sex-specific processes. Also, they are of particular importance in the hormone analysis at VenusMed. A disorder or an imbalance can cause problems in sexual function and reproduction. This can result in cycle disorders, infertility, a lack of libido, potency problems and more. What is more, hormonal problems can often occur due to the female menopause or the PADAM syndrome (“Partial Androgen Deficit of the Aging Man”).
Sex & reproduction hormones
In women we usually test the following hormones in our hormone analysis:
- Progesterone (luteal hormone) – is responsible for developing the uterine lining for the implantation of a fertilised egg. If this hormone is out of balance, the fertilised egg can usually not implant.
- DHEA-S (dehydroepiandrosterone) – is also known as the “feel-good hormone” as it has anti-depressive effects. It also helps to maintain libido.
- LH (luteinising hormone) – controls ovarian function and ovulation. LH levels that are too low may cause infertility.
- FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) – provides information about the eggs’ maturity.
- SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) – is a protein that transports sex hormones in the blood.
- Testosterone – Women also have this male sex hormone. Levels that are too high may be a cause of infertility.
- IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) – provides information on certain metabolic processes.
- Estradiol (E2) – contributes to the monthly development of the uterine lining. Estradiol levels that are off may be a cause of infertility.
- Estrone (E1) – an important female sex hormone that occurs with menopause. If it is out of balance, it may cause menopausal problems or osteoporosis.
In men we usually test the following hormones in a hormone analysis:
- IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) – provides information on certain metabolic processes.
- DHEA-S (dehydroepiandrosterone) – is also known as the “feel-good hormone” as it has anti-depressive effects. It also helps to maintain libido.
- FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) – is important for testicular development and sperm cell formation.
- LH (luteinising hormone) – increases testosterone production in the testicles.
- SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) – is a protein that transports sex hormones in the blood.
- Testosteron – is the main male sex hormone (androgen). A defect may e.g. cause reduced sperm count, depressive moods, and osteoporosis.
How a hormone analysis is done

What a hormone analysis is for
A hormone test is used to diagnose certain hormone-related disorders or illnesses.
Hormones are important chemical messengers that are vital for our physical functions. In the event of a hormone malfunction, or an over- or underproduction – metabolic disorders can occur, which usually cause characteristic pathologies. These may result in symptoms such as cycle disorders, infertility, potency issues, menopausal problems, or underactive ovaries.
After diagnosis, our experts at VenusMed can treat these pathologies with targeted treatment methods and therapy options to alleviate your symptoms.

FAQs about hormone analysis
The hormone analysis at VenusMed costs 190 €. It includes a specialist examination and consultation to discuss your results.
At VenusMed hormone analyses start with a blood sample. The specimen is then forwarded to the laboratory, where it is carefully analysed. This enables us to identify hormonal disturbances or imbalances. If you wish, we can then start treatment or therapy.
A hormone analysis gives a clear overview of the body’s hormonal balance. It tests which and how many hormones are present, along with their ratio to each other. If someone has hormone disorders or imbalances, they often have to deal with problems such as cycle disturbances, infertility, potency problems or menopausal symptoms.
For men, a hormone analysis for determining sex hormones can be done by an andrologist. For women, the right doctor to do this is a gynecologist. Our experienced doctors from both medical disciplines are happy to help you.
