Vasectomy has a Pearl Index of 0.1 and therefore is the safest method of contraception for men. It is a surgical sterilisation for which both sperm ducts are cut, making it a permanent way to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

It is important to note that the procedure does not affect your hormonal balance in way. Thus, your potency, sexual pleasure, as well as your ability to orgasm remain unchanged after vasectomy. Moreover, after a sterilisation you will still be able to ejaculate just as you did before. The only difference will be that the ejaculate will consist only of seminal fluid, without sperm cells. It will however look completely the same to the naked eye and will visually be indistinguishable from its original state.

Process of a vasectomy

First you will have a consultation with a urologist, during which you will find out all information about the requirements, the medical process, and the associated risks. You can also decide for yourself whether you prefer a general or local anesthetic for the procedure.

The procedure itself will be carried out on an outpatient basis by a consultant urologist and takes about 20 minutes. During this routine operation, the sperm ducts will be cut, which prevents sperm cells from entering the sperm fluid, making fertilisation of the female egg impossible and thus preventing pregnancy.

The surgery will be followed by a short recovery time, which is about 15 minutes after local anesthesia and approximately 1 hour after general anesthesia. You can then leave the VenusMed center and continue your normal, daily activities.

However, you should avoid physical exertion and sports for the next two to three days.

Recovery time & check-up

The point of operation may feel a bit sensitive to touch after the procedure. If this is the case, cooling it with ice can relieve the pain, which usually only last for 2-3 days. However, it is also possible that you will be completely symptom-free after the procedure. In addition, it is not a problem to resume your normal everyday life immediately after the procedure. However, you should allow yourself about a week of rest before you start doing exercise and having sex again.

It is important for you to consider that after a successful procedure, some sperm may stay in your semen for a few months. This is perfectly normal as it got there before the sterilisation. To check the long-term success of the procedure, a follow-up examination is carried out at the VenusMed center, once approximately after 12 and once after 16 weeks.

Each of these examinations include the analysis of a semen sample. If no sperm can be detected in the ejaculate of both samples, you can stop using additional contraception.

Another check is recommended after about a year.
